Introduction

We are a family of mum, dad and two children, daughter 10 and son 8. We live in West Dorset. Last summer we entered a wildlife friendly garden competition for Dorset wildlife trust and, to our amazement, won a first place. This inspired us create a blog to encourage gardening for wildlife. With so much habitat loss across UK gardens have become important places to support wildlife. With a little extra consideration our gardens can become our own little wildlife sanctuaries. It doesn’t matter what size your garden is, even if it’s no more than a tiny courtyard or balcony, there’s still room for a few plants to support some pollinators.

As a family we are new to creating a blog and are not particularly up on technology, so apologies if the blog is lacking initially. Our plan is to include four different perspectives on our wildlife gardening. Dad’s perspective will be in the form of a diary that includes the things noticed over every couple of weeks or so. Son’s perspective is taken with a camera, photos included in the blog are virtually all his. Daughter’s perspective will be by way of bigging-it-up for the creatures that are perhaps a little less popular or even feared, Invert’ Focus, she wants to help people understand their vital job within the garden and surrounding areas.  Mum’s perspective takes the form of a pollination calendar to plan for a succession of flowering plants attractive to pollinators. There will also be a feature about the evolution of the garden over the 16 years that we’ve lived here. A journey that has included many themes to arrive as the garden we have today and is barely recognisable from the day we viewed the property…… Anything is possible!
